Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour
Lam Tai Fai College organised a six-day, five-night "Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour" from March 28 to April 2. Led personally by School Supervisor Dr. Lam Tai Fai and Principal Kwok Kim Fai, around 60 teachers and students travelled to Nanjing to embark on this educational journey. Through site visits, inter-school exchanges, and local life experiences, the tour enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of the country's historical development and cultural heritage, further fostering their sense of national identity and pride.

School Exchanges
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the school exchanges. We visited four of Nanjing's premier institutions, namely Jinling High School, Nanjing Ninghai Middle School, The High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University, and Nanjing Foreign Language School. At every stop, our teachers and students received a warm welcome. Teachers from both places engaged in professional dialogue, exploring and sharing their respective educational philosophies and cultural characteristics in a deeply meaningful interaction.
Another significant milestone of this trip was the official signing of the "Sister School Cooperation and Friendship Agreement" between our school and Nanjing Ninghai Middle School. The ceremony was simple yet solemn, marking the formal establishment of a friendly partnership and setting the stage for future exchange activities. In his speech, Principal Kwok said, "Lam Tai Fai College has always placed great importance on nurturing students with a strong sense of commitment to the nation, encouraging them to love the country and Hong Kong, and to be responsible citizens with a sense of social duty. This is why we organise annual visits to the Chinese Mainland. We hope to continue working together to promote sister-school exchanges and jointly advance the educational development of both schools and places."

As always, stepping into classrooms was the part students looked forward to most. Our students paired up with buddies at the four schools to attend classes together. Each campus and every lesson offered unique inspiration. Huang Runyao, a Secondary 4 student, shared, "In the STEAM course at Jinling High School, I created a 'wordless plaque' and experienced intangible cultural heritage through enamel craft. It allowed me to experience the educational charm of blending tradition with modernity." These exchanges not only expanded students' knowledge, but also strengthened their cultural confidence.

Furthermore, Feng Hing Yat, a Secondary 3 student, noted, "I was deeply attracted by the strong artistic atmosphere at Nanjing Ninghai Middle School. Masterpieces of calligraphy and painting were everywhere on campus." Under the guidance of art teachers, students from both schools worked on a theme titled "The Pen as a Letter, Ink as Emotion", sketching Hong Kong's vibrant life on stamps and condensing their shared aspirations on a single canvas.

Han Feier, a Secondary 3 student, was deeply impressed by The High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University. She shared, "The most unforgettable moment was listening to the teacher tell the story of the school since its founding in 1902. The school motto, '嚼得菜根,做得大事', particularly moved me."

At Nanjing Foreign Language School, guided by its educational vision of "Chinese roots, global vision", students realised that learning a language is not only about memorising words for high scores, but also about connecting with a broader world. During the visit, students tried woodblock printing and created biological specimens. Kan Yan Lam, a Secondary 5 student, remarked, "Although the specimens could not be brought back to Hong Kong, the interaction and experience in class remain vivid in my memory."

Over three days of school exchanges, students overcame geographical and language barriers, openly sharing learning experiences and reflections, and exchanging souvenirs. At farewell, both sides were reluctant to part. They exchanged contact details, and the seeds of friendship had already begun to take root.

Visiting Historical Sites and Cultural Landmarks
In addition to school exchanges, the itinerary included a range of cultural attractions. In Nanjing, praised as an "ancient capital of the Six Dynasties", teachers and students visited numerous historic sites and cultural landmarks, including Niushou Mountain, Jinling Town, Jinghai Temple, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Xuanwu Lake and the Xuanwu Gate section of the Nanjing City Wall, Grand Bao'en Temple Heritage Park, Nanjing China Imperial Examination Museum, and the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. These visits enabled everyone to explore the city's profound cultural depth in a more meaningful way.
On the first day, we visited Niushou Mountain and Jinling Town. The elegance of Jinling Town perfectly showcased the grandeur of the ancient capital. The magnificent architecture of Niushou Mountain, particularly the Usnisa Palace, resembles a blooming lotus on the outside and is palatial on the inside, leaving everyone in awe.

One of the proudest moments for the students was facing the 392 steps at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. They climbed to the top without hesitation, and the experience inspired them to face future challenges with perseverance. Lam Sen Ip, a Secondary 5 student, expressed, "Standing here, I felt a deep sense of respect. Dr. Sun Yat-sen's commitment and vision for the nation truly moved me."

At Grand Bao'en Temple Heritage Park, teachers and students walked through palace-like structures, imagining the former splendour of this birthplace of Southern Dynasties Buddhist temples. Seeing excavated national-level artefacts and sacred Buddhist relics firsthand was deeply impactful. The iconic Glazed Pagoda in particular broadened students' horizons.

Later, at the Nanjing China Imperial Examination Museum, students explored the evolution and significance of China's ancient imperial examination system. Viewing historical documents and examination-related artefacts helped them better understand the arduous path of learning pursued by scholars in the past. They learned that the imperial examination system not only produced countless scholar-officials, but also had a far-reaching influence on social mobility. This experience sparked students' motivation to learn and deepened their understanding and identification with traditional Chinese culture.

On the fourth day, the group visited the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders. Attending a sharing session with descendants of survivors allowed students to face a painful chapter of history. Zhou Tsz Lam, a Secondary 3 student, said, "I will share these feelings and this history with more people. While we must strive forward, we must never forget the path we came from."

Experiencing Local Livelihood and Technology
For students from Hong Kong, experiencing local daily life was especially engaging. Key highlights included the Nanjing Eye Pedestrian Bridge, Fuzimiao Pedestrian Street, and the Qinhuai River. Along the bustling streets, unique local snacks and a dazzling array of handicrafts were everywhere, filling teachers and students with excitement. Everyone shared food with one another, soaking in the picturesque night scenery and the vibrant everyday atmosphere of Nanjing.

A night cruise on the Qinhuai River was a major highlight. At night, the riverside scenery looked like a painted scroll, with ancient buildings mirrored on the water. Riding a traditional painted boat, shimmering ripples made us feel as if we had entered a poem. No wonder Zheng Xie once praised, "Along ten miles of Qinhuai waters unfolds a tableau of Six Dynasties splendour." Students seized every chance to take photos and preserve these beautiful memories. Finally, we strolled across the Nanjing Eye Pedestrian Bridge, taking in the city's stunning night views, and ending the journey with unforgettable memories.

Against the backdrop of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, the school also arranged special visits to the Nanjing Artificial Intelligence Eco-Block in Yuhuatai District, as well as Nanjing Tianchuang Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. Students experienced firsthand the power of integrating technology with industry and felt deeply inspired. The visits helped students understand the wide-ranging possibilities of AI in urban applications, smart transport, and industrial collaboration, further sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies.

Appreciation Dinner
To express heartfelt gratitude to the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the Nanjing Municipal Government, and all parties for their strong support of the tour, Lam Tai Fai College held an appreciation dinner before the end of the trip.
During the dinner, School Supervisor Dr. Lam said, "Through this exchange, we hope our teachers and students have gained a deeper understanding of Nanjing's history, education, and economy, thereby enhancing their sense of national identity. We look forward to continued collaboration with our sister schools to achieve mutual growth in education."

Students performed songs and dances to express their gratitude.

The evening reached its climax when Supervisor Dr. Lam led the teachers in a rendition of the song "Friends".

This "Nanjing Cultural Exchange and Study Tour" enabled us, through campus visits and exchanges among teachers and students, to gain deeper insight into local educational development and culture. Through interactive exchanges, students learned from one another, strengthened friendships, and broadened their horizons. This precious experience immersed teachers and students in a rich historical and cultural atmosphere and revealed the unique charm of Chinese traditional culture. At the same time, by learning history more deeply, students further strengthened their cultural identity and their emotional bond with the motherland. They also recognised their responsibility to inherit history and carry forward Chinese traditional culture. As Lu You wrote, "What you learn from books always feels shallow; only through practice can you truly understand." This trip to Nanjing was the best proof of that truth.
